The Shafali Verma-led Indian team created history on Sunday by winning the inaugural edition of the Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup. India played the final match against England in Potchefstroom, South Africa and won by 7 wickets. After the historic victory, the Shefali brigade was felicitated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Apart from BCCI office staff, legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar also felicitated the players.
Sachin hailed the spirit of the Indian U-19 women’s team. He told the team, “First of all, I wish you all the best for a great win. The whole country and cricket fans are celebrating your victory. In 1983 and only 10 years old, I dreamed of winning the World Cup. But by winning this World Cup, you have given birth to new dreams. You have inspired countless girls in India and abroad who want to be like you. Now you are a role model.
Sachin continued, “I hope you get stronger from here. I wish you win more titles for the country. It’s a good time for women’s cricket. Now the women’s premier league is also starting, which is a big deal. Congratulations to all the players including BCCI for this. I believe in equality between women and men. The Women’s Premier League will be a great platform for players. Equality and equal opportunities are very important.
Notably, the World Cup winning team reached Mumbai from South Africa on Tuesday and reached Ahmedabad for the award ceremony on Wednesday. At the award ceremony, BCCI gave five crore rupees as a gift to the players.
