The politics of Tripura used to revolve around the Left for a long time. But the feat done by the BJP in the 2018 elections was no less than a miracle in the political circles. BJP has also demolished the strongest fort of Left in Tripura. BJP had registered a historic victory. BJP registered victory by touching the majority figure on its own. This victory of Tripura is also important for the BJP because the party had ousted Manik Sarkar, who was in power for 25 years, while traveling from zero to the top.
BJP along with its ally IPFT won a total of 44 seats. The BJP contested 51 seats in Tripura and secured 43 per cent votes. Whereas, CPM won 16 seats. The BJP’s strong performance came as a surprise, as the party did not have even a single councilor in Tripura before 2018. The party got less than 2 per cent votes in the 2013 assembly elections.
Now the election backgammon has again started in Tripura. Along with the BJP, the Left and the Congress are also preparing themselves for the assembly elections. The BJP is worried that no matter how it retains its power, the Left has to once again show strength in its stronghold. The Congress is trying to strengthen itself by riding on the shoulders of the Left. At present, the command of Left and Congress in Tripura is with two old leaders. The command of CPI(M) is with Jitendra Chowdhary. The 65-year-old Choudhary is ready to go to any extent to defeat the BJP. He has been a Member of Parliament and his dream is to reinvigorate the Left in Tripura. He is ready to fill Manik Sarkar’s place.
He is the youngest secretary of CPI(M). He got the command of the part in 2021. His strong point is that he is also a tribal leader. He says that it is not an alliance with the Congress but an arrangement. BJP is tearing apart the constitution. People are being deprived of their rights. In such a situation, it becomes our duty to bring together non-BJP parties and prepare a strong front. For this they are ready to do anything. However, their equation didn’t seem to work out when their talks with Pradyot Kishor Tipra Motha didn’t materialise. Although Tipra Motha supported Choudhary on his seat but the talks between the parties could not materialise. Tipra Motha’s tribal hold is very strong.
The command of the Congress is with 71-year-old Birajit Sinha. He was always with the Congress. That is, he always kept fighting with the Left. Once he was a minister in the provincial government. He has been becoming MLA for many years. Along with Sudip Rai Barman, he was one of the leaders who advocated an alliance with the Left. Birjit Sinha, who has been handling the work of state Congress president since 2019, says that his aim is to uproot the BJP from Tripura. For this, he is ready to take any help and do it.
He says that this alliance of Left and Congress will emerge as an example in the politics of the country. We will show people how BJP can be defeated. However, their use has not been effective in the past. In 2018, the Congress got zero seats despite aligning with the Left. The vote bank of Congress also came down from 45 per cent to 3 per cent. But if seen, Congress does not have much option. He has no choice but to go to Left.
For the time being, both the leaders are concentrating on small nook and corner meetings. His strategy is opposite to that of BJP. BJP’s 40 star campaigners are working to mobilize the crowd. All their emphasis is on pulling people towards them. Both are moving forward with a special kind of strategy.
