South Africa have announced a 17-man squad for the tri-series starting this month. There are two uncapped players in the squad in the form of all-rounder Henry Dirksen and wicketkeeper Tebogo Macheke. On the other hand, Sune Luce will handle the captaincy. Apart from hosts South Africa, this tri-series also features teams from India and West Indies. This is the South African team’s first international assignment since the Commonwealth Games in July last year.
Veteran Dane van Niekerk has been left out of the squad. He could not meet the required fitness criteria, due to which he was not selected. Veteran wicketkeeper Trisha Chetty is also out as she recovers from a back injury.
CSA Coordinator of Selectmen Clinton du Preez said of Niekerk,
Dane has made great progress and this is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, he did not meet the minimum national standard and is therefore ineligible for selection and we will continue to work on his fitness by continuing to assess him through the tri-series for the World Cup.
The tri-series will begin on January 19 and the first match will be between South Africa and India. All matches will be played at Buffalo Park in East London.
