united nations. Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, reiterated that Russia would extend the food pact with Ukraine for only 60 days instead of the previously stipulated 120 days. Meanwhile, the UN human rights secretary said the extension of the pact was important to secure the world’s food supply and keep inflation under control.
A Russian delegation told UN officials in Geneva on Monday that Russia wanted to shorten the extension period so it could consider the changes needed to make the package work. Nevenzia repeated the same thing. The deal, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, was signed last July for 120 days, allowing Ukraine to export food and fertilizer from one of its Black Sea ports.
The contract period expired in November last year, and the period has been extended further, and the contract will end on Saturday. Nebenzia said the deal would automatically be extended for 120 days if neither side objected, but Russia formally objected. UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths said at the beginning of the Security Council meeting that the deal was important, saying the Black Sea Food Initiative had led to a drop in food prices globally.
