What is the matter?
Rahul Gandhi has been sentenced to 3 years in a 5 year old case. In fact, Rahul Gandhi had made a remark regarding the Modi surname in an election rally. After which BJP MLA Purnesh Modi filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi. On March 17, Surat’s district court, after hearing the matter, reserved its judgment and on March 23 convicted Rahul Gandhi and sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment. The court gave Rahul Gandhi 30 days to approach the higher court and granted him bail.
As soon as Rahul Gandhi was convicted by the Surat court, people started raising apprehensions that Rahul Gandhi might be stripped of his membership of parliament, because according to the law, if a parliamentarian is convicted of any crime and the minimum jail term of two years in the case. If convicted, he loses the ability to be a member of Parliament. The same happened and Rahul Gandhi’s membership of the Parliament was taken away.
