Protests against raising the retirement age in France continued on Friday, slowing train traffic and causing trucks to queue at the commercial port of Marseille. More than 450 protesters were arrested on Thursday in and around Paris.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Friday that some 441 policemen and other officials were injured due to violence during some of the marches. He said 1,000 dustbins were set on fire in the French capital in a protest a day earlier. Dustbins have become a symbol of protest amid a week-long strike by rag pickers. Macron’s office announced that the state visit of Britain’s Maharaja has been postponed. Charles III was due to arrive in France on Sunday on his first foreign trip after becoming king. After this, he had to go to Germany on Wednesday.
The program of his visit to Germany is fixed. Oil supplies to the refinery in Normandy were restored on Friday after police intervened, according to French Energy Transition Minister Agnes Penner Rancher. However, the protesters are holding meetings to further disrupt the supply to the refinery. Significantly, French President Emmanuel Macron ordered Prime Minister Elizabeth Borne to use the special constitutional power. Following his order, Parliament was forced to approve without a vote the much-controversial bill to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.
