BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) — Northern Ireland took Kyle Lafferty out of its squad Friday for Nations League video games after a video on social media appeared to point out the veteran striker use a sectarian slur towards Celtic.
The Northern Irish soccer federation stated it was “aware of a social media video” circulating which it famous Lafferty’s Scottish membership Kilmarnock was investigating.
Kilmarnock beforehand stated it “finds all forms of discriminatory behavior completely unacceptable.”
The video confirmed the 35-year-old Lafferty showing to pose for a photograph with a fan who then expressed assist for Celtic, which historically is supported by followers of Catholic religion.
Lafferty, who performed for Celtic’s metropolis rival Rangers in two spells, was then heard utilizing an expletive and derogatory time period for Catholics and Irish nationalists.
Northern Ireland hosts Kosovo on Saturday and performs at Greece on Tuesday.
