Thiruvananthapuram: The first day of the new year 2023 Surendran K. It was a dream come true for Patel when he was sworn in as judge of the 240th Judicial District Court in Fort Bend County, Texas. US-based Surendran K. Patel is a resident of Kerala.
Judges are elected in America
District judges are chosen through elections in the US and Patel became the first Indian Malayali to become a district judge in the US by defeating a sitting judge in the first round of the election.
had to work as a ‘beedi’ roller
Patel’s path to the position of judge was not easy and it was due to his determination, hard work and willingness to fight his way upwards, as he comes from a humble background. Since his parents were daily wage earners, he had to work as a ‘beedi’ roller to meet both the needs. Surendran soon became adept at making beedis. Life was difficult for him when he took a year break after class 10th.
studying while working
He completed his further education and graduation, while also working part-time as a daily wage laborer to earn his livelihood, but never let it affect his studies.
also worked in the hotel
After taking admission for LLB in a college in Kozhikode, he worked in a hotel and passed law in 1995 and started practicing law directly.
married a nurse
Then he got married to Shubha, who was a nurse by profession and she moved to Delhi.
Got a chance to go to America again
In the year 2007 his wife got an opportunity to work in America and he also joined them and since his passion was law, after working in a supermarket for some time he took the Texas Bar exam and passed it . He then took admission for the LLM program at the University of Houston Law Center, passed it with flying colors and resumed working as a lawyer. On the first day of the new year, he wrote his story in the record book.
