IND vs SL 3rd ODI Controversy, Yuvraj Singh: The last match of the ODI series between India and Sri Lanka has got mired in controversies. Actually, the reason for this is not any batting, bowling or any player but the spectators. The number of spectators in this match was very less. Team India’s former veteran all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has raised questions regarding this. Not only this, the Sports Minister of Kerala also made a controversial comment, which was severely criticized.
Yuvraj raised questions
The low turnout in the third and final ODI between India and Sri Lanka on Sunday raised serious questions about the relevance of the 50-over format. Former veteran cricketer Yuvraj Singh expressed concern over this. Actually, India has to host the ODI World Cup later this year and it was not good to see the absence of such a large number of spectators at the Greenfield International Stadium. Yuvraj, the hero of India’s 2011 World Cup winning team, wrote on Twitter, ‘I am worried that half the stadium is empty? Is ODI cricket ending?
Sports Minister made controversial remarks
Kerala Sports Minister V Abdulrahman on Sunday faced flak for saying that hungry people do not need to go and watch the match amid low attendance at the ODI match. The Greenfield Stadium (55,000 spectators capacity) in the capital of Kerala recorded an attendance of less than 10,000 people during the match. Talking to media persons on Sunday about the sale of match tickets, Abdulrahman said, ‘What is the need to reduce tax? There is a demand that inflation is increasing in the country, so tax should be reduced. Those who are starving do not need to go and watch the match.
KCA Chief gave statement
KCA President Jayesh George said that the association would communicate with the minister to clear his misunderstanding. However, the KCA president said that the Pongal festival, along with the CBSE exams, could be other factors that led to the low turnout at the match, while criticizing the minister’s remarks. There was a lot of sparring between the opposition Congress and the BJP minister’s statement. Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan said, “People were shocked to hear such an absurd and rude statement from a minister and the democratically elected government of the state.” (Input: agency)
