IND vs NZ Hockey World Cup 2023: India’s dream dashed, out of Hockey World Cup after losing to New Zealand in crossover match

India vs New Zealand World Cup 2023 Match: Indian hockey team crashed out of the tournament after losing the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup crossover match against New Zealand. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) World Cup match at the Kalinga Stadium ended with a score of 3:3 in the main time. After that, India lost 4-5 on penalties and with it India’s dream of winning the trophy after 1975 ended. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (17), Sukhjit Singh (24) and Varun Kumar (40) scored goals for India in the match at Kalinga Stadium. New Zealand’s goals were scored by Sam Lane (28), Russell Kane (43) and Sean Fundile (49). Harmanpreet Singh and Sukhjit Singh scored one goal each for India while Raj Kumar Pal scored two goals each. Nick Woods, Phillips Hayden and Sam Lane scored for New Zealand, while Findlay scored twice to secure the victory for the Kiwis.

With this victory, New Zealand advanced to the quarter-finals against Belgium. Hosts India are out of the quarter-final race and will now face Japan in the 9th-16th place match on January 26. The first five shootouts resulted in a 3-3 draw for both teams. Findlay scored for New Zealand in the sixth attempt, while Raj Kumar scored for India. Phillips missed Hayden and Sukhjit Singh in the seventh attempt. Sam Lane scored for New Zealand at the eighth attempt and Shamsher Singh failed to get past wicketkeeper Dominic Dukhin as India crashed out of the World Cup by one ball.

In the fourth quarter, New Zealand tried their best to put pressure on India. India are leading the match but New Zealand are not ready to give up. New Zealand took the lead in the 49th minute with a penalty and Sean equalised. India got a PC in the 52nd minute. But Harmanpreet failed again. The fourth quarter ended and the score was 3-3 at full time.

Trailing after the first half, the New Zealand team has more possession. In the first 6 minutes, the teams could not even reach the goalposts. India scored two consecutive penalties in the third quarter and Varun Kumar gave India a 3-1 lead. New Zealand were awarded a penalty in the third quarter and Kane converted. The match took an interesting turn in the third quarter. Although India still lead 3-2.

India vs New Zealand 2nd quarter

In the crossover contest, India took the lead. At the beginning of the second quarter, Akashdeep, Shamsher and Lalit showed excellent coordination and scored the first goal of the match. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay scored a goal in the 17th minute against New Zealand. In the second half, India scored a penalty corner in the 6th minute. Varun Kumar took a long time for the drag flick. India took a penalty and scored, but New Zealand disallowed the goal with a video referee. India got the fifth PC of the match and the team scored the second goal. Harmanpreet’s powerful shot was blocked by the keeper but Sukhjit was quick to put the ball wide of the post. Meanwhile, New Zealand managed to score a goal in the 28th minute of the game. Sam Lane scored the first goal for the New Zealand national team.

Both teams played cautiously in the first half. The Indian team looked a little more attacking. The New Zealand captain was given a green card. He will be out for two minutes. India’s Manpreet Singh received a green card in the 10th minute. Rajkumar Pal’s contribution gave India their first penalty corner of the game. But captain Harmanpreet failed to convert it into a goal.

The match will start after the national anthem of both teams. It is very important for both teams to win this match to stay in the World Cup. Before the match, there were doubts about Mandeep’s fitness but he is fit and doing well.

India beat Wales 4-2 in their last league match on Thursday. Earlier, India beat Spain 2-0 and drew with England in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup. The top four teams from each pool advanced directly to the quarter-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams played each other to reach the last eight.
