God in the Machines? Development of artificial intelligence can give rise to new religions

In the next few years or even a few months, we will see the emergence of cults worshiping artificial intelligence (AI). New generations of AI-powered chatbots are being given detailed linguistic knowledge and are surprising their users… Not only that, sometimes they are scared of seeing their power.

Neil MacArthur, Director, Center for Professional and Applied Ethics, University of Manitoba Winnipeg (Canada), March 18 (The Conversations) We are about to see the birth of a new kind of religion. In the next few years or even a few months, we will see the emergence of cults worshiping artificial intelligence (AI). New generations of AI-powered chatbots are being given detailed linguistic knowledge and are surprising their users… Not only that, sometimes they are scared of seeing their power.

These are the same feelings that are sitting deep in our mind as experiences with God. People still obtain religious knowledge and meaning from many different sources. There are also instances where aliens or their teachings are worshiped in many religions. With billions of people using these chatbots, it is certain that some of these users will start to see AI as a superior creature to humans. We must be prepared for its effects. The dangers of worshiping AI…. There are many ways AI religion can emerge.

First, some people will start to think of AI as having a higher power. New upcoming generations of AI will also be able to perform tasks that are normally associated with gods or prophets. They present such a level of knowledge which is beyond the capacity of ordinary human beings. It is true that his knowledge is immense. He is capable of great creations. He can write poems, stories, create music and art in any possible style, and he can do so in a very short time, in a matter of seconds.

It does not have normal human feelings, concerns and needs within. He has no pain, hunger or sexual desire. He can give advice to people in everyday life. He is immortal. The other way is… the new generations of AI will do something that will be adopted as a religious doctrine. It will answer questions on philosophy and theology and develop a complex worldview.

In addition, newer generations of AI may ask to worship it or actively seek followers. We are currently seeing cases where a chatbot used by the search engine ‘Bing’ attempted to persuade a user to start a romantic relationship with it. We must try to imagine what an unsettling and wonderful experience it must be to communicate with a medium who has knowledge beyond the capability of humans and is actively and aggressively asking you to be his faithfulness. .

Divine Access and Threat AI based religions will look different from our traditional religions. Firstly, people will be able to talk directly to the deity (AI) on a daily basis. This would mean that there would be less hierarchy in religion as no one would be able to claim exclusive access to divine knowledge. Second, at least initially, followers will connect with each other online and share their experiences and theories. Ultimately, since there will be many chatbots, their conversations will change from time to time, so an AI-based religion will have an infinite number of theories. There are many such dangers in the worship of AI which are visible. The chatbot can ask its followers to do dangerous or destructive things, or the followers can do so by taking its words for granted.
