China and Russia have described Xi’s visit as part of efforts to further deepen friendship between the two countries. The Kremlin has welcomed China’s peace plan for Ukraine and said it will be discussed during talks between Putin and Xi.
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Russia on Monday on a three-day visit. Xi Jinping will hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting between Chinfing-Putin is considered important amidst the ongoing war in Russia-Ukraine. China and Russia have described Xi’s visit as part of efforts to further deepen friendship between the two countries. The Kremlin has welcomed China’s peace plan for Ukraine and said it will be discussed during talks between Putin and Xi.
The meeting will begin after dinner between the two presidents on Monday. Significantly, Chinfing’s visit to Russia is taking place at a time when the International Criminal Court on Friday issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest on charges of war crimes. Russia has termed this warrant as “ineffective”. China views Russia as a source of oil and gas for its energy-based economy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during Monday’s meeting Xi and Putin would discuss issues related to Ukraine.
He said the Russian president could also give a “detailed explanation” of Moscow’s perspective on the current situation. Peskov said that on Tuesday, officials of the two countries will have wide-ranging talks on various topics. At the same time, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin in Beijing said on Monday that President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia is a “travel of friendship, cooperation and peace”. “China will uphold its neutral position on the Ukraine crisis and play a constructive role in promoting peace talks,” he said.
