Protesters protest in the streets of London.

In Britain on Wednesday, more than 5 lakh people took to the streets of London to protest against Rishi Sunak’s government. It is being described as the greatest British work of the last decade. Most of the people who protested were teachers, civil servants and train drivers, who left their jobs and went on strike. These people want the government to raise wages and control inflation.

According to Aljazeera, there were only about 3 lakh teachers who went on strike, who were angry because of the rising prices due to Corona and the war in Ukraine. Before the strike, the Prime Minister’s Office had issued a warning that it would lead to chaos. Despite this, people did not agree and started to protest.

23 thousand schools were affected
The National Education Association said the teachers’ strike was so large that it affected 23,000 schools. While in Britain, most of the trains are closed because the train drivers do not go to work. His salary is going down. Even after working 10 hours, people have to spend the day eating pasta. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, between 2010 and 2022, there is a 9 to 10% decrease in teacher pay.

British unions are threatening more strikes if the demand is not met.

Newspapers call strike ‘2023’
Many UK newspapers have dubbed Wednesday’s strike as ‘Lockdown 2023’ and some are calling it ‘Walkout Wednesday’. The protests have been compared to the 1978–79 protests in Britain, also known as the Winter of Discontent.

Professor Catherine Barnard of the University of Cambridge told The Washington Post that there are very strict laws in Britain regarding strikes, that no one can easily go to the streets in such large numbers. However, if more than 5 lakh people have left their homes, the issue is serious.

Rishi Sunak is on course to become Britain’s first British Prime Minister
On Monday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “If it were possible, I would have removed your problems with just a magic wand, but it is not possible.”

In fact, the Sunak government believes that if the salaries of teachers and civil servants are increased, it will increase inflation, which is already rising in Britain.

People have compared her to Britain’s first Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for the decision not to raise wages. Steven Fielding, a professor of political history at the University of Nottingham, said Sunak was walking in the footsteps of Margaret Thatcher. Which is not good for them at all. When he became Prime Minister, he claimed that he would manage the UK economy properly. Margaret Thatcher also came to power making similar claims. Sunak no longer listens to the union strike.

The government is also preparing to pass a new anti-strike law there. Thatcher did the same. Although Margaret Thatcher was not harmed by taking such decisions, but according to Professor Steven, times have changed. During Thatcher’s time the mood was in favor of her party which is no longer the case. Sunak’s Conservative Party has been in power in Britain since 2010. Even after this there is no improvement in the situation, they may bear weight in the upcoming elections.

Apart from London teachers, train and bus drivers took part in the strike.

Looking at inflation in Britain
The Retail Consortium of Britain released a report on 31 January, stating that there was an 8% increase in shop prices in January, the highest since 2005. Store inflation refers to the increase in the prices of everyday items available in the store. It was 7.3% in the month of December. According to Bloomberg, there was a 13.8% increase in food prices in Britain. Because of this, the prices of fruits and vegetables have increased rapidly.
Apart from this, a record increase in gas and petrol prices has been recorded due to the war in Ukraine. According to the BBC, due to the increase in electricity prices in the last 2 years, the bill of the entire British people has increased to 7 lakh crore rupees.
