Chittagong is an important port of Bangladesh which is strategically important due to its proximity to the northeastern states of India. The Dhaka Tribune newspaper quoted Prime Minister Hasina as saying, “If India wants, it can use our Chittagong and Sylhet ports.”
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has offered India the use of the country’s ports at Chittagong and Sylhet, saying it will enhance connectivity and people-to-people contact in the region. The prime minister made the offer when Ram Madhav of the India Foundation met Hasina at her official residence Gana Bhavan on Sunday. Prime Minister Hasina said that this step will enhance regional connectivity and people-to-people contact. Reportedly, in conversation with Madhav, Hasina also sent her greeting message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Madhav appreciated the socio-economic growth of Bangladesh under Hasina’s leadership. “Being neighboring countries, Bangladesh and India enjoy a wonderful friendship and hope that this relationship will continue in the future as well,” he was quoted as saying in the report.
